South Pathetic Reviews
Jim's one man comedy SOUTH PATHETIC, a 2009 hit at San Francisco's New Conservatory Theatre, will be performed at the New York International Fringe Festival in August 2009. Here are reviews -
SF WEEKLY – “Hilarious. His confidence, solid accents, and loving attention to Southern idiosyncrasy allow each cast member of this
Streetcar (a stripper, a pot smoker, a diva, etc.) to be funny and avoid stereotyping. David’s comforting ease of personality, as well as his well-tuned comedic timing, illuminate this play’s heart: Theater is community, not necessarily product.”
SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN – “David’s hilarious one-man recounting of a career low point if filled with nothing but highs for his audience. David’s preposterous Southern stereotypes – and the lessons, certainly not about acting, that they impart – are drawn lovingly from the real thing and generously padded with his own cutting wit.”
SAN FRANCISCO BAY TIMES – “His frenetic energy and variety of characterizations, as well as his intense involvement, carry the show. Where his brilliance shines is in his material. Some of his throwaway lines are side-splitters and pass by in a second leading to more humorous – and sometimes telling – lines.”
TALKIN’BROADWAY.COM – “A side-splitting frolic. The one-liners come fast and furious, and you have to have your wits about you to catch all of the zingers. The artist's takes on these characters are an absolute delight. Some are hilarious, some very poignant. He skillfully changes voices and accents at a moment’s notice. A cross between
Greater Tuna and
Waiting for Guffman.”
MY CULTURAL LANDSCAPE, SAN FRANCISCO – “A painfully funny narrative about what can happen when an out-of-work comedian returns home to direct a production of the
Tennessee Williams classic,
A Streetcar Named Desire, for the worst community theater in the South, Jim David's opus is a must-see for any self-respecting theater queen. The ads say, ‘Be very afraid.’ In all honesty, the only thing you need to fear is that you might wet your pants from laughing for a solid 80 minutes as Jim David nails one character after another to the walls of the Thermal City Little Theatre. The writing is brilliant and the actor's delivery is hilarious.”
FOR ALL EVENTS.COM – SAN FRANCISCO – “An unexpected hilarious romp - a New York stand-up comedian with extended Comedy Central credentials who captivated the opening night audience leaving them in hysterics. Think
Greater Tuna without costumes. From this day forward Jim David will be a household name for audiences at the New Conservatory Theatre Center.”
BEYOND CHRON – SAN FRANCISCO- “Wild and extraordinary. I think that Lincoln Center should invite this gifted actor/playwright to bring his ‘play within a play’ to their theater.”
QONSTAGE.COM – “Laugh-out-loud funny and a perfect antidote for anyone suffering the downturn doldrums. This was one of the funniest theatrical productions I have ever attended-I laughed until I cried-and I want to see it again.”
NEW YORK BLADE – “An absolutel delight. At turns hilarious and tender, the play is a knowing commentary on life in the arts, the wonder of chasing dreams, and the value of second chances.” The writing is fresh and funny.”
THEATERMANIA..COM – “Smart and funny, a testament to the fact that every person in the world has his own unique story. David spins his way through the show getting laughs that aren’t at the expense of his characters but, rather, at the comic blundering of humanity. There’s much warmth in his mockery.”
ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT CHRONICLE – “From this unlikely premise, hilarious mayhem arises. If you aren’t laughing at the punch lines that pepper his performance, you probably need resuscitation. He keeps us laughing, and laughing, and laughing.”
